In 2024, the Modesto Library was temporarily closed so work could begin on a major, publicly funded renovation to the 50-year-old downtown building. The plan called for necessary safety and technology upgrades and a modest facelift.
To supplement the effort and elevate the project to a level of excellence, Friends of the Modesto Library embarked on a campaign to raise $3 million for enhancements such as more comfortable, durable furniture, a reimagined childhood development area, quiet reading rooms and much, much more.
In late 2025, the Lifelong Legacy campaign achieved its ambitious goal. We thank the hundreds of donors, large and small who contributed. Donations are still being accepted; additional monies will go toward landscaping and exterior upgrades of the Library, which is slated to reopen in October 2026.
